Last year, I began to make more environmentally conscious choices when it came to my beauty routine. I began to research small swaps I could make that would potentially save me some money, as well as benefiting the planet in the process. That’s when I turned my attention to my usual deodorant. Prior to this swap I used aerosols from Soft and Gentle, which is a cruelty-free brand in the UK, but I think we should all know by now that aerosols aren’t great. I’d also tried some natural, roll-on deodorants, but sometimes they aren’t the most effective. And so, I initially began looking into refillable deodorants from brands like Wild, but after comparing prices, I realised that it would cost me more than I was willing to spend.
After a little internet delving, my mum was actually the one to discover Nuud. A deodorant unlike one I’ve seen before - I’d seen powders, roll-ons, sprays and aerosols, but never a cream. Of course, the brand was an immediate win for me, since they’re 100% vegan and cruelty-free, plus they have a sustainable production and distribution service. Their packaging is also made from bioplastic sugar cane, and arrives in a biodegradable cardboard box. As for the formula, like I said the consistency is almost like a moisturiser, but don’t worry because it’s suitable for all underarms – Whether you’re a person who grows hair or not, adult or adolescent.
Now I wasn’t aware of this beforehand, but it’s not actually sweat that smells, it’s in fact the bacteria on your skin that causes any bad odour. So obviously good hygiene is important for your perspiratory system, and other regular deodorants use ingredients which clog up your underarms, which can again effect how you sweat. Nuud doesn’t use any aluminium, alcohol and is completely fragrance-free, making it a good choice if you suffer from sensitivity too. The science behind preventing odour comes from micro silver which neutralises the bacteria, although unlike other deodorants there’s no worry of clogging or staining.
As for my own experience with Nuud, they recommend experimenting with how often you use their product. A perk of this deodorant is that the formula is super concentrated, which means you only need a small, pea-sized amount per armpit – Apparently a 20ml tube can last 10 weeks, although with my own usage, I’m currently 4 months in with a good amount still left in the same tube. How you use this deodorant is definitely subjective, whether you apply once a day or once a week. For me, after trialling how long I could leave my underarms, I found myself re-applying every 2-3 days; which seems about right considering Nuud says the average is 3 days with one application.
It’s also a super easy application, just like applying a moisturiser, and you have the reassurance that you won’t need to re-apply for a few days. I’ve showered, exercised and even decorated my bedroom, all in between applying Nuud, and it hasn’t seemed to have any major effects. Of course, there’s been times when I’ve sweated more than usual, which meant I had to apply Nuud more regularly, but it’s all about finding a routine that works for you. Just think of it like washing your hair, you simply have to find out how long you can leave it before admitting defeat.
Overall, I’m really happy with this switch to Nuud, the application and its effectiveness seem to work for me, and the general ethos of the brand is something that I want to continue incorporating into other aspects of my beauty routine.
Pros:
· Conscious to the environment and you.
· Use less product than regular deodorant which means it lasts longer.
· Free shipping.
Cons:
· More costly than others.
· Depending on the person, having a different application method compared to aerosols or roll-ons. (But I’ve found myself to prefer Nuud as it doesn’t leave any residue and instantly absorbs)
If you’re interested, I’ll leave the link to their website here, as well as an introduction to using Nuud here for more information and useful tips. As for more ethical beauty swaps, I’ll be posting as many as I can, sharing the ways they’ve helped me and hopefully help you too – But only if you’re in a position to do so of course. I recently shared a post all on my experience with a menstrual cup, and I'll be working on a post all about my new razor next.
